Barrique wood tells a story of sustainability, recovery, and transformation. What was once destined to hold the finest Italian wines is now reborn as unique pieces of furniture.
This initiative began in 2012 with the project “Barrique, the new life of wood”, developed in collaboration with the San Patrignano community—a visionary idea that transformed oak barrels into extraordinary design elements. Barriques, 225- or 500-liter barrels used for wine aging, have a limited lifespan in the cellar: only three harvests. Without this project, the precious wood they are made of would be destined for destruction.
Barriques are crafted from oak wood, air-seasoned for at least three years. Each stave is unique, shaped by the heat of fire and marked by wine-hued tones that testify to its encounter with wine. This wood, imbued with history and character, is a noble material capable of expressing new beauty even after its life cycle in the cellar has ended.
Riva1920 recovers these barrels with artisanal sensitivity, enhancing every mark left by time. Once the barrels are opened, the staves are processed within ten days, transforming them into furnishings that carry with them the memory of wine and the mastery of handcrafted workmanship.
